As a powerful and influential baron at the head of a Crusader Family, you must compete with the other barons for power, influence, and prestige in the Holy City.
Over five rounds, you will first bid for one of the four Offices. Each Office grants its own unique special ability, but it also determines the turn order for the round and, most importanty, provides you with a number of squires. Squires are your critical resource in the game, for you must use your squires to claim control of the sixteen areas on the gameboard.
Each area represents part of the political and economic power structure of Jerusalem: The Royal Palace, the Holy Sepulcher, the Tower of David, and more. Control of these areas is the key to gaining the resources you need to navigate the troubled politics of the City: Bezants to bid for offices and hire mercenaries, squires to control areas and secure income, and the critical Prestige that you need to build your own castle tower.
After the squires are played and incomes collected, you convert your Prestige into tower floors. Each player′s tower acts as visual representation of his total score—you can literally watch your Prestige growing!
But not everything in Jerusalem is under your control. Three times during the game, the swirl of historical events that surrounds the Holy City will intrude upon your plans. A war with the Saracens may break out. The King may levy a special tax, or a new Patriarch may be elected. These events have a sweeping effect on the balance of power in the city.
You must shrewdly deploy your resources to acquire the Prestige you need to win, while preparing for events beyond your control if you hope to claim your place at the pinnacle of power. If you fail, it will be the shadow of your rivals′ towers that dominate the Holy City of Jerusalem!
